Sounds crazy right? How can people play solos with only five notes?! I'll let you know how! Some guitar players seem to get a guitar and start playing great solos without any effort, these people hardly raise a sweat; some other unfortunates have a problem with their instrument all their life without coming to a noticeable progress.
I guess it just is dependant on those that 'get it' can do it and the people who 'don't have it' will never be are able to do it.
WRONG.
Everything is dependant on 'those that understand how to do it', can do it and 'people who have no idea how to do it' can't. It has absolutely nothing to do with natural talent or other myths about learning music.
In early stages in my guitar playing journeys I was often perplexed by certain individuals who were 'not the brightest crayon on the tree', yet they could play really neat solos about the guitar, whilst I (who had been taking music classes) could only play several kiddies tunes.
Apparently , a particular 5 note music scale is the secret, which five note scale? The minor pentatonic music scale.
From a technical perspective any number of 5 notes might be called a pentatonic scale however the one which interest us as guitar players may be the minor pentatonic music scale.
Extensive research has revealed that the cords from the minor pentatonic scale can be found in nearly every culture on earth, this is a classic universal scale not to mention explains it's popularity (both on guitar as well as in music.)
Music of the whole earth:
Here's something to consider; in the past, people worldwide working in isolation (from one another) arrived at exactly the same (or almost the same) set of notes.
Why five cords? easy, people have five fingers.
Why do the notes within the music scale vary (slightly) from country to country? Again, that's an easy one, it is because of the size of the individual's hand.
Whenever a person in India is making a wooden flute the distance between your holes is going to be slightly differ to some flute made in Africa - it seems sensible right? The musical instrument maker would craft their instrument to match the dimensions and shape of their hand, this makes up about some slight variations within the same group of 'universal' notes.
